A rubric for The Pigman has to do two jobs at once. It needs to tell students what a strong essay looks like, and it needs to let you score forty papers without rethinking your standards on every one. For evidence, look for specific moments, such as the prank call, the zoo trip, or the party. For analysis, look for an explanation of why the moment matters. For writing control, keep the focus on clarity and on the conventions that get in the reader's way.

If your department shares the novel, score the same three papers together in a short meeting. You will find disagreements quickly, and most of them trace back to a descriptor that could be read two ways. Fix the descriptor and the disagreement usually disappears.
