This upfront investment tends to reduce the number of essays that need substantial restructuring after grading, since the core argument was tested and strengthened before the drafting process even began.

A rubric that separately scores thesis quality, distinct from evidence use and organization, makes it easier to give students precise feedback on where their essay is actually breaking down. A student with a weak thesis but strong close reading skills needs very different feedback than one with a strong thesis but thin evidence.
