Most midterm exams function as summative assessments—you give them, you grade them, they count toward a grade. But a midterm can also function as formative assessment: an opportunity for students to demonstrate what they know and for you to get feedback on what's working and what isn't. The difference is in how you use the results.

In a formative midterm model, the grade matters less than the feedback. You're giving students detailed information about their strengths and specific areas for improvement, then using that information to adjust instruction for the second half.

Formative vs. Summative Midterms

A summative midterm is weighted heavily in the final grade. A student who scores low on the summative midterm carries that score for the rest of the year. A formative midterm is an information-gathering tool. The score informs instruction and feedback, but it might be weighted lightly or not at all in the final grade. Both have value, but they're different purposes.

• A formative midterm is lower-stakes, so students are less anxious and more likely to show genuine effort rather than panic. That makes the assessment more accurate.
• Because the grade impact is lower, students are more open to seeing the results as feedback rather than judgment. That makes them more likely to actually use the feedback to improve.
• Formative midterms give you rich data about what your first-half instruction accomplished without carrying a heavy weight in the grade book.
• Students who are struggling at midterm get a message that they still have time to improve, rather than a message that they're already behind. This is motivating rather than demoralizing.
• A formative midterm serves as practice for a summative final exam. Students see what the assessment looks and feels like before it fully counts.

Designing a Formative Midterm

A formative midterm looks and feels like any other assessment, but the stakes are explicit. You might tell students: 'This midterm is practice for your final exam. Your midterm grade counts for 5% of your course grade, mainly as practice. What matters most is the feedback you get, so you can improve before your final.' That framing sets expectations.

Make sure your rubric is detailed and your feedback is specific. In a formative model, the detailed feedback is what you're really delivering, not the grade. Invest in making that feedback useful.

Using Formative Midterm Results to Plan Instruction

A formative midterm is only valuable if you actually use the results to change instruction. If the midterm reveals that your class struggled with evidence selection, you should plan a unit on finding and evaluating sources. If it reveals that organization is weak, you teach outlining. If it reveals that some students mastered the material and others are still confused, you differentiate instruction for the second half.

Without that instructional adjustment, the midterm is just busy work. With it, the midterm is a powerful learning tool.

Transition to the Final Summative Exam

Use formative midterms to prepare for a summative final exam. Students have already seen the format and the type of evaluation they'll receive. They know what to expect, they've gotten feedback on what needs improvement, and they've had time to work on it. When the final exam comes, it's not a surprise; it's the culmination of a progression that started at midterm.

This progression is far more effective than a low-stakes midterm followed by a shocking high-stakes final. Students have time to learn and improve between the two assessments.
