A good question links history to text. For example, how does the historical setting of Lindo's arranged marriage explain her sense of duty in the novel? Such questions keep research tied to interpretation.

Avoid questions that only ask for information, like what was life like in China at the time. They lead to reports, not arguments. Push students to make a claim that history helps them prove.

Source Evaluation and Citation

Teach students to check who wrote a source, when, and for whom. Require a mix of source types and set a minimum. Model how to quote or paraphrase a source and explain how it supports the argument.

Include citation in the rubric so students know it counts. Use a consistent style, such as MLA, and provide a short guide. Small errors are less important than the habit of crediting sources.

Grading Research Alongside Literary Analysis

Score two things: the quality of the research and the quality of the literary analysis. An essay with strong sources but no connection to the novel should not earn top marks. Neither should one with insightful analysis and no evidence of research.
