Few prompts in Watership Down generate as much debate as the leadership question. Hazel, Woundwort, Cowslip, and Threarah lead in very different ways. Students can argue for any of them, which makes this a good assignment for argument writing.

A strong argumentative essay takes a position and defends it against the best objections. That means a student who thinks Hazel is the best leader needs to address why someone might prefer Woundwort. Ignoring the other side makes the essay weaker, not stronger.

Most students need practice with this. They tend to write one-sided essays that read like a list of reasons. A short lesson on counterclaims, with a model paragraph from the novel, changes the quality quickly.

The prompt matters too. "Which leader would you follow?" is less useful than "What qualities make a leader effective in a crisis, and which rabbit shows them best?" The second version gives students criteria to argue about, not just a favorite.

Scoring the parts of an argument

Break the rubric into claim, reasons, evidence, counterclaim, and rebuttal. Each part deserves its own descriptors. A student can have a good claim and weak evidence, and the score should reflect that.

• Claim: names a criterion for good leadership and a leader who meets it
• Reasons: two or three distinct arguments, not restatements
• Evidence: scenes that show leadership in action
• Counterclaim: a fair statement of the best opposing view
• Rebuttal: an explanation of why the claim still holds

Fairness when opinions differ

You may have a favorite leader in this book, and so may your students. Score the argument, not the choice. A well-defended case for Woundwort should outscore a lazy case for Hazel.

Blind grading helps. Cover the name on the first few essays, or have a colleague score a sample. If your scores match, you are grading the writing.

Common problems

Students often define a good leader after choosing one, which makes the criteria too convenient. Ask them to set the standard first and then test the candidates. That small change in order improves the logic of the whole essay.

Another issue is treating a leader's flaws as an automatic rebuttal. Saying Cowslip is a poor leader because of the snares is not enough. The essay needs to show how his choices kept the danger hidden, and push for that causal link.

Using AI for argument scoring

Argument essays are structured enough that AI-assisted scoring can check for the presence and quality of each part. A tool can flag a missing counterclaim or a rebuttal that never actually answers the objection. That gives you a fast read on which essays need attention.
