Most students come to Grendel focused on the monster. The humans in the novel, though, are where Gardner does much of his most pointed work. Hrothgar, Wealhtheow, and Unferth each embody a different way of living inside a violent world.

That makes them good subjects for character analysis essays. It also makes them easy to flatten. Students tend to reduce Hrothgar to an old king, Wealhtheow to a peace offering, and Unferth to a fool.
